Sonny LaGrant Black Eagle, 60 of Lodge Grass peacefully passed away at Billings Clinic Hospital Saturday evening April 13, 2024. Bímmaaxpaash Sacred Water, was born April 9, 1964, in Crow Agency, a son of Mary and the late Hartford "Sonny" Black Eagle, Jr. He grew up and received his education in the Lodge Grass area.
Sonny married Bertha Bird on October 6, 1993, but have been together since March 1989 and the couple made their home in Lodge Grass. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church, Native American Church, Whistling Water and was a child of the Big Lodge. Also was a member of the Night Hawk Society.
Sonny was preceded in death by his father Hartford Black Eagle, Jr., his sister Marilyn Black Eagle; his in-laws Nora Fighter and Richard Bird; adopted parents Clevia Jones and Art Fitzpatrick; his grandparents Hartford and Ruth (Fog in the Morning) Black Eagle, Sr., Louis Walks Over Ice and Elizabeth Fitzpatrick; his uncles Myers Black Eagle and Cedric Walks Over Ice; his brothers Carson Walks Over Ice, Myron Little Light, Marlon Black Eagle and Larry Black Eagle, Sr.; his sisters Sandy Walks Over Ice and Charlene Black Eagle, his aunt Teresa Gun Shows; his nephews Gareth Reed, Jr., Aubrey Black Eagle, Sr., Shann Nomee and Tanner Black Eagle.
His achievements have always been led by the talents of his dancing in Men's Crow Style tradition. He was hot dancer and was well known throughout the community of Lodge Grass and the Crow Tribe. From 1996 to 2014 it led him to participate in many trips to Germany, Taiwan, and France. He's met many people and made many friends from different countries and cultures. His legs took him places he never imagined and were the staple of his ability to showcase his dancing to the eyes of many of whom now compliment him as a legend.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Bertha, his mother Mary Black Eagle; his daughter Lanita (Clyde) Jefferson; his precious granddaughters, Nora and Koda Jefferson whom he loved with his entire heart; adopted daughters, Shonna (David) Walks, Misty (Tom) Nagel, Jr, Adree (Barry) Whiteman, Maranda Black Eagle, LaTonna Jefferson, Natasha Reed, Adree Shield, Whitney Nomee, Trinity Rides the Bear, Taylor Slater; his son, Larele Black Eagle; adopted sons, Lydale Nomee, Ty Moccasin, Troy Hugs, Kyrie Jefferson; godchildren, Ambrose Big Lake, Travis Reed, Jr, Kevannah George; sisters, Mary Ruth (Danny) Plainfeather, Kathleen Dawes, Tina Black Eagle, Germaine, Geneva, Carol Black Eagle, Gema Stewart, Sharolynn (Chester) Nomee, Sr, Philamine and Venessa Spint, Jeralyn (Joey) Pretty On Top; brothers, Cedric (Audrey), Hartford (Dinah), Brad (Billie Kay) Black Eagle, Ronnie (Virjama) Flatmouth and Mike (Marjorie) Nomee; aunts Delma Yarlott, Regina Goes Ahead; uncles Chief (Mary Helen) Medicine Horse, Larry (Pearl) Tobacco; nephews, Brant Black Eagle, Chester (Jonalea) Nomee, Jr, Adrian (Allison) Bird, Jr, Travis (Willena) Reed, Sr, Randall, Dylan (Cora), Levi (Brocade) Black Eagle, Ryland Bird/Williams, Wacey (Tawni) Black Eagle; nieces, Garilyn Reed, Wendy Nomee; adopted family, Steven (Lucy), Tim (Lynn), Ronald (Charmayne), Luke, Sandy, Ambrose (Viola), Faith Benally, grandmother Betssie Wagon; uncles, Samkey Benally, Lawrence Cleveland; adopted brothers, Jean (Cécile) Lemaro, Burton (Randean) Pretty On Top and former President Barack (Michelle) Obama. Extended families include Iron, Walks Over Ice, Medicine Horse, Bear Claws, Sarah High Nose Stewart family, Other Medicine, Pretty Paint, Black Hawks, Old Crow, Lucy Real Bird family and Laura Singer family.
